People: ROP Teachers Recognized for Their Work

Jul. 19–Two local 49er Regional Occupational Program teachers have been named Teachers Who Make a Difference by the Association of California School Administrators.
Cheryl “Cher” Steele, who teaches 49er ROP medical assisting for high school and adult students in Placer and Nevada counties, received the honor for the 2006-07 school year.
Steele’s students have had nearly 100 percent job placement every year, and her students have been the highest- scoring job applicants with the Sutter Medical Foundation, states a news release.
Len Menges, who teaches automotive technology at Nevada Union High School, also received the distinction for the 2006-07 school year.
Menges, who is receiving the accolade for a second time, taught 49er ROP auto tech for 24 years and retired in June.
Menges’ students work as certified automotive technicians throughout Northern California, and many have furthered their education in the automotive field, the release states.

The 49er ROP program also recently named its outstanding student, teacher and business of the 2006-07 school year.
Kirollos “Cookie” Gendi, a health careers student, was named outstanding student of the year. Gendi, who wants to become a pediatric oncologist, has interned in the Trauma-Neuro Intensive Care unit at Sutter Roseville Medical Center, states a news release.
Gendi graduated from Granite Bay High School in June and plans to attend the University of California, Davis.
Lisa Saiia, owner of dentassist, a placement service for dental practices, was named outstanding business partner of the year. Saiia has served on the 49er ROP Dental Careers Advisory Committee for several years.
Sue Conners, who has taught for 49er ROP for 14 years, was named outstanding teacher of the year.
Conners teaches programs such as health careers, nurse assistant-home health aide and medical terminology, the release states.

An Ophir Elementary School student was honored by Placer County Water Agency directors recently for her success in a regional water education contest.
Taylor Delp, 12, was one of three winners in the fifth- through eighth-grade category, and the only Placer County winner in the 23-county “Be Water Wise” program, a news release states.
Taylor studied water, completed the “Be Water Wise Challenge” and wrote an essay about water.
Taylor received a video on water issues, an engraved paperweight from the water agency and a $100 check from The Bee, which co-sponsored the program, along with the Regional Water Authority.
