W.T. Cooke Elementary School, a Title I school in Virginia Beach, was named a co-recipient of the 2007 Vernon M. Geddy Jr. Technology School of the Year award by WHRO.
Army Reserve Pvt. ZarDee B. Brathwaite, son of Lena Brathwaite of Virginia Beach, graduated from nine weeks of basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Brathwaite is a 2006 graduate of the Commonwealth Challenge Program, Virginia Beach.
The Commodore Chorus, which meets in Virginia Beach, won the AAA division, and placed third overall in the annual Southern Division Competition in Reston. This is the second consecutive win for the group. The score, 1229 points, qualifies the chorus for the Mid- Atlantic District competition to be held in Wildwood N.J., this fall. Also, Four Karat Gold, a senior quartet made up of members of the Commodore Chorus, placed fifth in the quartet competition. The members are also eligible to compete on the district stage in Wildwood. Norm Barbee and W.D. Bankart directed the singers. The Commodore Chorus is part of the Barbershop Harmony Society.

Christian Broadcasting Network’s 30-minute weekly youth culture magazine program, “One Cubed USA,” recently won two Bronze Telly Awards for the 2006 television season.
ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS
The University of Virginia’s College at Wise announced names of Virginia Beach students who have recently been named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. They are Reginald Rodney Dorsainvil, Henry Valmon Potter Jr. and Brad Keith Schassberger.
The University of Virginia’s College at Wise announced names of Virginia Beach residents named to the spring dean’s list, with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. They are Leeza Marie Dos Santos, Valenne Louise Ogden and Brad Keith Schassberger.
Patrick Carnes, son of Scott and Elizabeth Carnes of Virginia Beach, was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2007 semester at Virginia Tech. A 2004 Kellam High graduate, Patrick is a rising senior majoring in history.
Thomas Carnes, son of Scott and Elizabeth Carnes of Virginia Beach, was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2007 semester at the United States Military Academy at West Point. A 2004 Kellam High graduate, he expects to graduate from West Point and receive a commission as a 2nd Lt. in the army in May, 2008. He is continuing his military training at Fort Bragg, N.C. and Fort Hood, Texas.
Brett Oliver, son of Michael and Cynthia Oliver of Virginia Beach, was named to the dean’s list for the fall 2006 semester at Radford University.
Amy Hardy of Virginia Beach was named to the spring 2007 dean’s list at Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids, Mich.
The Chesapeake-Virginia Beach Alumnae Chapter Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. recognized senior honor graduates for their academic achievements. Brad Keith Schassberger of Virginia Beach was recently inducted into the Psi Chi Honorary Society at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise. Psi Chi is a national honor society for psychology students.Schassberger was also named to the dean’s list for spring 2007 and included in Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.
Elena Aksel, daughter of Rimma and Gregori Aksel of Virginia Beach, is a recipient of a Harrison undergraduate research award at the University of Virginia, where she is a chemical engineering major. Aksel will use her grant to research bioremediation and its use in the removal of pollutants from underground water. She also made the dean’s list and received the Sherrie W. Bladen Memorial Scholarship, and served as a resident adviser at the university.
Cora Ruth Flottman, daughter of Marilyn and Arnold Flottman of Virginia Beach, was named to the dean’s list at North Greenville University for the spring 2007 semester.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Robert Standing of Virginia Beach, a senior majoring in crop and soil environmental sciences in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences at Virginia Tech, recently received the Bayer Scholarship. The Bayer Environmental Science USA Future Turf Managers established this scholarship for a student in his or her final year of study in the two- or four-year turfgrass management curriculum.
Stefany Guido, a former W.T. Cooke Elementary School student, is the 2007 recipient of the $500 Lois Barbour/ Cheryl Sparks scholarship awarded by Cooke’s PTA. Guido, a 2007 graduate of Ocean Lakes High School, will continue her education at Longwood University and study environmental science.
Marissa Rice, a 2007 graduate of Ocean Lakes High School, is the recent recipient of the Nettie D. Faulcon Scholarship of $4,000 awarded by the Chesapeake-Virginia Beach Chapter Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. Rice plans to attend Virginia Tech and major in biological sciences.
Chartway Federal Credit Union named Virginia Beach students who received the Director’s Memorial Scholarship program $1,500 scholarships. They are: * Jennifer Houghton, Kempsville High School. She plans to attend Virginia Wesleyan College. * Ashley Davis, Landstown High School. She will attend The Katherine Gibbs School. * Katrina Gonzales, Princess Anne High School. She plans to attend the University of Virginia.
Jacob Nelson Lambeth, a Salem High School senior, is the recipient of the Norman L. Fields Memorial Scholarship. This award, in memory of an outstanding Virginia Beach teacher, is given to an individual who has excelled in student leadership while exemplifying high ideals in academics, athletics and community endeavors.
Brookwood Elementary School former students, Aaron Boyd and Ashley Hudgins, received the Charlie Benson/PTA Brookwood Scholarships. Boyd, from Princess Anne High School, will attend Virginia Wesleyan College. Hudgins, from Ocean Lakes High School, will attend Christopher Newport University in the fall.
SCHOOL NEWS
Rachel Johnson, an Ocean Lakes High School Math and Science Academy student, was recently acknowledged at an art reception and recognition ceremony at the Contemporary Art Center in Virginia Beach. Johnson is one of 10 public high school students selected to serve on the Teen Apprenticeship Program during the current school year.
Yuriko Rollins, Ocean Lakes High School Japanese teacher, has been selected as a Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction by The National Society of High School Scholars for excellence in teaching and for the encouragement of and dedication to the academic success of students.

Fabricio Quirola, art teacher at Kempsville Middle School, was a featured artist in this year’s Tapestry of Knowledge.
Three College Park Elementary School students won the 10th Virginia Commonwealth “Use A Helment Prevent Epilepsy” campaign. They are: Dalton Palmer, 10; Bobbi Hill, 9; and Cassadii Brenneman, 10. The students presented their posters to Virginia First Lady Anne Holton and received bike helmets.
New Castle Elementary School’s team of fourth-graders won highest honors in the Blue Division of WordMasters Challenge, placing fourth in the nation. Special achievements were won by: * Katie Magnant and Sierra Yowell placed among the 28 highest-ranked fourth-graders in the country. * Katie Magnant and Tyler Moreland earned perfect scores in this meet, where nationwide only 127 fourth-graders did so. * Outstanding results in the final meet were won by: Grant Covert, Cecelia DiNonno, Skyler Kaspar, Katlyn Logsdon, Alex Prisinzano, Elly Rauch, Sierra Yowell, Kylon Callaway, Zoe Henry, Tyler Kechula, Will Roussel and T.J. Spry.

Jonathan Roberts was selected as Brookwood Elementary School Patrol of the Month for May.
Sarah Sykes, a fifth grade language arts teacher at Landstown Elementary School, received the Elementary School Technology Classroom Teacher of the Year honor at the Great Computer Challenge.
Marie Booz, computer resource specialist at Landstown Elementary School, was named Elementary School Technology Educator of the Year.
GRADUATES
James Corey Jackson, of Virginia Beach, graduated from Mitchell Technical Institute, Mitchell, S.D., on May 11. He majored in computer systems technology.
Brett Cook, son of Howard E. and Bonnie F. Cook of Virginia Beach, received a bachelor of arts degree in religious studies from Regent University’s School of Undergraduate Studies on May 5. Cook graduated from Kempsville High School in1979. He plans to pursue graduate work at Regent University.
James F. Lock III, son of Jim and Kathy Lock of Virginia Beach, received a bachelor of science degree in organizational leadership and management from Regent University’s School of Undergraduate Studies on May 5. Lock graduated from Kempsville High School in 1989. He is married to Nicole Lock.
Heather Roberti, a 2002 graduate of Cox High School, received her master’s of accounting at the College of William and Mary on May 20. Roberti, a 2006 graduate of William and Mary, has accepted a position in Washington, D.C., with the accounting firm KPMG.
Mariellen Carnes, daughter of Scott and Elizabeth Carnes of Virginia Beach, graduated from the United States Naval Academy and was commissioned an ensign in the navy on May 25. A Kellam High alumna, she will serve as a Surface Warfare Officer aboard the Antietam (CG-54).
