PROVIDENCE (AP) – Brown University yesterday announced a new dual- degree program with the Rhode Island School of Design that will allow undergraduates to receive bachelor’s degrees from both schools in five years.

Students can apply for the program for the 2008-09 academic year. Applicants will have to apply to both Brown and RISD and be accepted at both schools.

Brown and RISD students can currently cross-register, but the new dual-degree program – which was formally endorsed by the faculty and trustees at both schools – is intended to capitalize on the strengths of the two institutions.

“By combining Brown’s strengths in science and engineering, humanities and arts, and social sciences with RISD’s renowned programs in art and design studies and the liberal arts, we are offering students an extraordinary opportunity to draw on the offerings of two outstanding institutions,” Brown President Ruth Simmons said in a statement.
