Guides to Getting Involved at School
TWO new Scottish Executive publications offer guidance to schools on how to give pupils a greater say in the life of a school, and how to involve parents.
Aimed at teachers and education authorities, the guides are under the banner Practice for Positive Relationships, part of a new series of brief introductions highlighting the best work going on in Scotland’s schools.
The first, Positive about Pupil Participation, calls for pupils to be given a greater role in school communities with structured opportunities for participation, and suggests ways of ensuring that bodies such as school councils are more than “talking shops”. The second in the series, Reaching out to Families, argues the benefits of involving parents in the life of a school – not least of which is that “parents’ involvement means children do better”. Each issue is planned to feature a specific area of school life. They have been compiled by the Scottish Executive working with teachers, education authorities and schools.
