Five Teachers Added to Destin Middle School Faculty

Aug. 8–Five teachers have been added to the Destin Middle School faculty for the 2007-08 academic year.

An orientation for the new teachers with Principal Tommy Britt and Assistant Principal Rhonda Whetstone was held last week to familiarize them with school operations and to prepare their classrooms.

The new teachers:

–David Schmidt, 23, will teach sixth-, seventh- and eighthgrade math. Schmidt, born and raised in Destin, is a graduate of

the University of West Florida. During the 2006 spring semester, he taught chemistry at Fort Walton Beach High School.

“I look forward to fi nally meeting and working with the A+ faculty, staff and students here at this school,” Schmidt said. “I bring a strong work ethic with me, and I look forward to creating great relationships here.”

–Brittany Swain, 23, will teach sixth-grade science. Originally from Atlanta, Swain is a graduate of Florida State University. For the past three years, she has worked as a dance instructor at Tallahassee Ballet and Wildwood Ballet.

“I’m excited to work at a school of this caliber, especially with its wonderful faculty and staff,” Swain said. “I feel like I bring a positive attitude to my classroom, and I look forward to connecting with the students and showing them science can be fun.”

–Melodee Sweeney, 33, will teach sixth- and seventh-grade science.Originally from Panama City, Sweeney is a graduate of Valdosta State University. She previously taught science and social studies at Okaloosa Academy.

“I’m going to be working with top-notch students and staff here, and that’s exciting,” she said. “I hope to bring creative learning environment to my classroom, and I hope for a productive year in which I can learn and teach.”

–Theda Hahn will teach language arts She has transferred within Okaloosa County Schools from Laurel Hill School.

–Jose Fernandez will teach Spanish.

Hahn and Fernandez were not available for a photo and an interview.
