SUNWAY University College students who enrol in the Bachelors of Science (Hons) in Accounting and Finance course can do its six- month internship at Ernst & Young, R. ZEENEESHRI writes.

The way to gain real-world experience is to supplement your education with on-the-job experience.

An internship can separate you from other candidates vying for a full-time position.

Internships offer you education enrichment as you apply the knowledge you gain in classes.

Also, most internships offer additional training and learning experiences.

You may find that you understand concepts taught in class more easily after completing an internship.

Sunway University College has introduced an industrial linkage with its Bachelors of Science (Hons) in Accounting and Finance.

Students will be offered a six-month internship in their second- year pathway.

An agreement with Ernst & Young allows students to undergo their internship there.

Programme director Teo Ee Sing said Sunway would place students in companies for internship.

“We do not want our students using their work-based learning credits doing clerical work for their supervisors.

“We want them to experience the momentum of the industry and be given responsibilities which may secure them a job with the same company upon graduation.”

Internships enable students to apply their knowledge in communication, business awareness, application of technical knowledge and professional judgment in the organisations that they have been attached to.

Teo said the degree was also the institution’s way of meeting the government’s call for private-sector involvement in academics.

“It has been reported that there will be an estimated shortage of 16,000 accountants in Malaysia by 2020.

“This global deficit is limited to qualified and experienced finance professionals.

“It is essential that this deficit is addressed, for regardless of the economic situation, an accountant is always required by all entities.”

The BSc (Hons) in Accounting and Finance is validated by Lancaster University, UK, which is ranked 21 among British universities in the Times Good University Guide (2007).

Two Chancellor Scholarships are offered to achievers in academic performance and extra-curricular activities.

The scholarship provides a student with full tuition fees for three years and two weeks at Lancaster University, together with return ticket (economy class) and student accommodation.

Its syllabus is mapped against the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.

Students pursuing ACCA after the degree just need to complete five papers at the professional level.
