Funding special educational needs is a major issue for all local authorities across Wales, a new report warns. The Wales Audit Office highlighted Swansea as one example of good practice. The report, Good Practice in Special Educational Needs Funding, was commissioned by the Welsh Assembly Government.

It praised Swansea’s Dyslexia Friendly Schools Initiative, speech and language initiatives, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and autism strategies.

All these had helped integrate pupils in mainstream schools, says the report. Cabinet member for education, Mike Day, said, “This is an area that requires great sensitivity. The report shows that, given the growing demand and tight financial constraints, Swansea Council is taking provision for special educational needs very seriously.”
