Virtual Learning Environment Now Available in Welsh
A university has launched Welsh-medium software to help extend provision of Welsh-language education across the higher education sector. Bangor University has adapted and translated Blackboard, a software package used to support teaching and learning in the classroom, and for distance learning, into Welsh.
The Welsh version will be available to all higher education institutions in Wales.
“We are extremely pleased with this pioneering development that will enable the growth of Welsh-medium education across the whole higher education sector,” said Meri Huws, pro vice chancellor at the university.
Blackboard creates a “virtual learning environment” that can be used to present documents, to assess student work and to hold discussions.
Bangor’s information and services technology department adapted the software to Welsh with the help of multilingual support centre Canolfan Bedwyr.
