Voucher Issue About Money
In response to Noel Thornley’s comments (Readers’ Forum, Sept. 5), to assert that public education is not accountable is to disregard state and federal laws that hold public education accountable for accreditation, curriculum, finances, compliance with civil rights standards, student privacy — and the list continues.
The voucher question is not about control of children or the power of the Utah Education Association. It is a matter of using tax dollars to fund private businesses. If private-school funding is a problem, let the Walton family trusts provide scholarships but do not use public money for private business.
I agree strongly with Thornley’s statement that Utah’s students do very well in an underfunded school system because of parental involvement and committed education professionals. Imagine how much greater their success would be in a well-funded system with those same dedicated parents and teachers.
