Former Danvers Superintendent to Lead Massachusetts Reading Certificate Program

Posted on: Wednesday, 12 September 2007, 15:00 CDT

The MGH Institute of Health Professions has appointed Richard P. Santeusanio, EdD, as Associate Clinical Professor and Coordinator of the Reading Certificate Program, within the Graduate Program in Communication Sciences and Disorders.

The MGH Institute has long been recognized as a leader in preparing practitioners in allied health fields, including speech-language pathology. As one of the few master's programs in the country that dually prepares speech-language pathology graduates for both medical and educational settings, the faculty leveraged it's expertise to develop a comprehensive 16-credit Certificate of Advanced Study in Reading.

Specifically created for educators seeking in-depth training in the relationships of language development to reading proficiency and communication disorders, it is designed to develop leaders in literacy who can improve reading and writing practices.

The reading certificate program complements the credentials of any classroom teacher, special educator, speech-language pathologist, administrator, principal, or psychologist seeking a broader perspective on the science of reading instruction. With a foundation in spoken language development, it has immediate relevance for educators of second language learners and for classroom teachers with students from diverse linguistic backgrounds.

Dr. Santeusanio has more than forty years of experience in the field of education. He has taught at all levels, from elementary through college. He served 26 years as a public school administrator in Danvers, MA, as a Literacy Director, Pupil Services Director, Curriculum Director, Assistant Superintendent, and, for thirteen years, as Superintendent. Prior to joining the MGH Institute as Coordinator of the Reading Certificate Program, he managed the United States branch of STEPS Professional Development, an international consulting company. He has been an adjunct professor at Suffolk University, Salem State College, and Endicott College.

Dr. Santeusanio has consulted with many school districts throughout the country on topics related to literacy, 360 evaluation, professional learning communities, and other leadership related topics. He has published six books including Developing Reading Skills for Business and Industry, Improving Your Study Skills, Study Skills and Strategies, A Practical Approach to Content Area Reading, Read Up!, and Reading to Learn . He has also written more than 50 articles on leadership and literacy and for several years served as the "Classroom Materials" editor for the Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy.

Dr. Santeusanio holds a BA from Suffolk University, an MEd from Northeastern University, and an EdD from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

The MGH Institute of Health Professions (www.mghihp.edu), an academic affiliate of Massachusetts General Hospital, is an innovative and independent graduate school that operates within the framework of Partners HealthCare System. A progressive leader in developing comprehensive models of health care education, the MGH Institute prepares advanced practice professionals in the fields of nursing, physical therapy, speech-language pathology, clinical investigation and medical imaging through a distinctive combination of academic study, clinical practice and research. An average of 800 students are enrolled in graduate-level degree and certificate programs, with an increasing number of courses available online. The Institute is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.

(Editors: Our style preference is to not spell out 'MGH' on a first reference to our name, as it incorrectly implies the Institute is a department within the hospital. Alternately, we recommend, "The MGH Institute of Health Professions, an academic affiliate of Massachusetts General Hospital...")
