Alvin ISD Chief Tapped for Top Job at Clear Creek: Board Selects Smith, 49, in a Unanimous Vote

Sep. 25–LEAGUE CITY — Greg Smith, who has headed Alvin schools since January 2001, was named the new superintendent of the Clear Creek school district Monday.

Smith, 49, replaces Sandra Mossman, who announced her retirement this summer.

Mossman has worked for the school district 24 years, including the last four as superintendent.

The board unanimously approved Smith’s appointment.

Smith was named the lone finalist for the superintendent’s job of the 35,633-student district in August. After the announcement, the district had to comply with a 21-day waiting period before offering him the job on Monday.

“I’m so proud to be able to follow one of the best superintendents in the state of Texas,” Smith said of Mossman.

Aside from heading the 15,000-student Alvin school district, Smith worked as a deputy superintendent in the Pearland Independent School District, as a principal in the Galveston school district and as an administrator in the Clear Creek school district.

Smith received his undergraduate degree in elementary education from Oakland University in Rochester, Mich.; a master’s degree in educational management from the University of Houston-Clear Lake and a doctorate in educational administration from Texas A&M University.

Smith, who earns $196,650 in Alvin, will begin his new job Jan. 2. His salary as Clear Creek superintendent was not announced. Mossman had an annual base salary of $227,996.
