GUILDERLAND — The Guilderland Board of Education has hired a new principal for the high school.

Michael Paolino, the current associate principal at Voorheesville High School, will begin the job on Oct. 15, Superintendent Greg Aidala said. He will work closely with interim Guilderland High School principal Harry Kachadurian for a few weeks and then take over as head of the school in late October.

Paolino, whose appointment was approved by the board during its regular meeting on Tuesday, will be paid $110,000 a year. Aidala said his salary will be prorated for the remainder of the 2007-08 school year.

Aidala said Paolino has about a decade of experience in education, including stints as an administrator and business education teacher.

Paolino is also the district data coordinator in Voorheesville. He was a vice principal at Watervliet Junior/Senior High School. He began his educational career as a business teacher in Voorheesville.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and master’s degree in accounting from Union College. He completed his teaching certificate at Siena College and received his administrative certification from the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.

Aidala said Paolino was chosen from a field of about 30 applicants.

Former Guilderland High principal Michael Piccirillo left the district in June to take a job as assistant superintendent for secondary education and instruction at the Saratoga Springs City School District.

Paolino’s appointment is the second major hire in the district in less than a week. The board held a special meeting early Thursday morning to approve John McGuire as its new superintendent.

McGuire comes to the district from the Greenwich Central School District where he was the superintendent. He is expected to start in mid-November after Aidala retires. Scott Waldman can be reached at 454-5080 or by e-mail at swaldman@timesunion.com.
