Q “I’ve read that parents of children as young as three are now getting private tutors for them in English and maths. Do I need to get a private tutor for my four-year-old to make sure he doesn’t fall behind?”

A Peter Price, chairman of the National Primary Headteachers Association, says: “There’s no way that parents should be feeling the pressure to send such young children for private tuition.

“I think the quality of our educational system should be sufficient to guarantee that the right amount of time is given to the basic skills of literacy and numeracy. Learning should also be supported by parents, through things like bedtime stories, counting tins into the shopping trolley, and so on. That’s the natural way to learn.

“The pressure is too great on children as it is. Learning should be enjoyable at school and at home, and this is a ridiculous development.”
