Posted on: Friday, 12 October 2007, 09:00 CDT

Ed Donley, a former member of the Pennsylvania State Board of Education, is being awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE). The award is annually given to a state board of education member in recognition of outstanding service to public education.

"For fifteen years, Ed Donley has been an influential education leader in Pennsylvania. His studied and steady leadership have been instrumental in improving Pennsylvania's public schools during a critical time in American education. His legacy of service and success are a high standard for future educational leaders to meet," said Brenda Welburn, NASBE Executive Director.

Ed Donley served with distinction on the Pennsylvania State Board of Education from 1991 through 2006. Mr. Donley chaired the State Board committee that established Pennsylvania's first ever regulations governing pre-kindergarten programs operated by the state's public schools. During his many years on the Pennsylvania State Board of Education, he also served on the Governor's Advisory Council on School Construction and chaired the State Board committee on school facilities.

Ed Donley joined the Air Products Corporation in 1943 and became its President in 1966 and Chairman in 1978. In 1986-87, he was chairman of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. In addition, he served as chairman of the board of directors of American Standard Inc. and served on the boards of Cooper Tires, Mellon Bank, Pennsylvania Power and Light, and the National Endowment for Democracy.

"The Distinguished Service Award recognizes the contributions of those who serve on state boards of education across the nation. It is a testament to the fact that one dedicated person can make a positive difference in the lives of thousands of young people," said Welburn. The award is being presented at NASBE's annual conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on October 12.

NASBE represents America's state and territorial boards of education. Our principal objectives are to strengthen state leadership in education policymaking; advocate equality of access to educational opportunity; promote excellence in the education of all students; and assure responsible lay governance of education.
