With ABC Signup’s Registration Software, Customers Save Time, Money – and Trees

Customers choose ABC Signup’s complete online registration software to streamline registration management and in the process save time and money… and trees.
The latter benefit is one way to describe the dramatic reduction in paper that results from switching to ABC Signup-built online registration from a process that used to entail internal printing and often required registrants to fax, mail or hand deliver printed-out flyers and signup forms.
“It definitely saves us a ton of paper,” said Wendy Braun of Duluth Schools ISD 709. “We used to have a very tedious deal where the Office Support Specialist would go through e-mails, print them out, put the data in a spreadsheet and use that to register people for classes. We were spending three hours a day just doing signups, and oodles and oodles of paper were being used.”
“We now only print sign-in sheets and name tags, so ABC Signup obviously saves us a lot of paper,” added Anne Nelsen, Piedmont Triad Education Consortium. “All of the evaluations, attendance forms and certificates are completed online, so if I have 4,000 people attending events throughout the year, you can just imagine the paper not being used.”
Rather than leave it to one’s imagination, ABC Signup decided to conduct a little research using a couple of estimates and conservative calculations. It turns out that terms like “tons” and “trees” are accurate descriptors of the amount of paper saved by ABC Signup customers and their registrants over the past few years.
Since 2003, customers used ABC Signup’s registration software for well over 100,000 programs and events involving approximately 1.5 million participants. An estimated 70% of these customers came from a paper-based registration process that entailed mailed event flyers with registration forms and/or downloaded and printed flyers with registration forms – either of which needed to be filled-out and faxed, mailed or hand delivered to the organization.
Conservatively gauging that each event organized by these 70% of customers involved a total of three sheets of paper (the sum of a combination of an event information flyer, registration form, evaluation, certificate or fax) provides the final multiplier for some back of the napkin math. If 70% of the 1.5 million registrants used a minimum of three sheets of paper to register for events, a total of 3.15 million sheets of paper [.7 X 1,500,000 X 3 = 3,150,000] would have been used if not for ABC Signup’s online registration software.
According to Conservatree, one ton of basic copy/printer paper (400 reams or 200,000 sheets) requires approximately 24 trees to manufacture. By that ratio, ABC Signup customers have saved more than 15 tons of paper – or 360 trees – over the years.
“When we launched ABC Signup, our goal was to provide an easier, more efficient means of managing the registration process from both the customer and the registrants’ perspective,” said Todd Chandler, president of ABC Signup. “Eliminating much of the registration paper chase was just one of many benefits of our software, and now that we’ve achieved a certain scale, that benefit has become meaningful even beyond our customers.”
Chandler noted that the environmental benefit of the company’s registration software extends well beyond saving trees. The overall reduction in printing reduces waste created by empty printing cartridges. The ability to instantly register via the Internet dramatically reduces the need for postal deliveries or registrants’ needing to drive the forms to the site.
“In retrospect, we were ‘green’ even before being ‘green’ was cool,” he said. “It’s nice to make a positive impact on the environment while bringing so much convenience and efficiency to our customers and their registrants.”
