Boston University School of Management Establishes the John F. Smith, Jr. Professorship in Management

Boston University School of Management announced the establishment of the John F. Smith, Jr. Professorship in Management and named James E. Post, Strategy & Policy Department, as its first designee. John F. Smith, Jr., a graduate of Boston University Graduate School of Management ('65), is the retired Chairman and CEO of General Motors.
Originally from Worcester, MA, John "Jack" Smith was CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors of General Motors during the period 1992 to 2003. He joined GM as a Payroll Auditor in 1961, moving to its Financial Group in New York City in 1966. He went on to hold positions ranging from Director of International Planning to President of GM Canada, President of GM Europe and Head of International Operations.
Smith received his Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Massachusetts in 1960 and a Master of Business Administration from Boston University in 1965. He serves on the Board of Directors of Delta Air Lines, Procter & Gamble and The Nature Conservancy. He is also a Trustee of Boston University and a member of the School of Management's Dean's Advisory Council.

We will honor him in perpetuity by naming outstanding professors who will educate subsequent generations of builders and leaders," said Louis E. Lataif, Allen Questrom Professor and Dean, Boston University School of Management.
Professor Post holds degrees in law (JD) and management (MBA, Ph.D.) and teaches strategic management, corporate governance, ethics, and nonprofit management. He is one of the nation's most visible scholars in the study of public leadership and the changing relationship between business, government and society. His current work focuses on corporate governance, ethics, and accountability issues affecting managers, regulators and citizens.
Throughout his career, Professor Post has authored, co-authored or edited 20 books and more than 100 scholarly papers. He has also been widely sought-after for public commentary on Sarbanes-Oxley, stock-options back-dating, corporate responsibility for customer safety, and product recalls.
