TORONTO - Premier Dalton McGuinty says he doesn't think creating schools tailored to black students is a good idea.
The Toronto District School Board is exploring the idea of an "African-centred alternative school" which would target students from kindergarten to Grade 8. Advocates say the current system is failing black students, and they would like to have a school that better reflects their heritage.
But McGuinty says the idea of having a black alternative school makes him "personally uncomfortable."
He says the decision lies with the Toronto school board, but he says students are better off in diverse classrooms, learning side-by-side.
The Toronto school board is expected to report back on the idea later this month.
