Virginia Hoover, a school social worker for The High School Ahead Academy, was appointed by Gov. Michael Easley to serve on the Committee on Dropout Prevention. The committee determines which local school administrative units, schools, agencies and nonprofits will receive dropout prevention grants.

GCS recently committed to provide Discovery Education Science, a comprehensive multimedia tool kit that supplements school curriculum, for 11 middle schools.
Guilford College
Anore Horton of the Guilford College department of history will give a lecture in honor of Algie I. Newlin titled “What Good Is Citizenship? Learning from Puerto Rican Migrants’ Experiences in the 1950s” at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 8 in the Joseph Bryan Jr. Auditorium, Frank Family Science Center. Horton will discuss what drew her to her current research focus on the historical relationship between Puerto Rico and the United States.

Award-winning children’s author Carole Boston Weatherford will speak at the Guilford College Friends of the Library annual dinner at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 9 in the Carnegie Room of Hege Library.
In her talk, “Oh, Grow Up: Parallel Narratives for Young and Old,” Weatherford will offer insights about writing for children and adults.
A pre-dinner “meet the author” reception will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the library’s Central Hall, featuring an exhibit of illustrative material from Weatherford’s books. After the dinner and talk, Weatherford will autograph books, with some titles available for purchase.

Isabel Allende, one of Latin America’s most celebrated writers, will speak at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 13 at War Memorial Auditorium. It is the second event in Guilford College’s 2007-08 Bryan Series. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the Greensboro Coliseum Advance Ticket Box Office, online at Ticketmaster.com and by phone at 852-1100.
Also, a series of programs focusing on Allende’s life and work is planned at Guilford College.

Author Clint Johnson of Ashe County, whose latest book is “The Politically Incorrect Guide to the South,” will speak at noon Nov. 15 in the Koury Auditorium on the Jamestown campus. His talk is free and open to the public. Johnson is expected to explore the South’s unique culture and its place in the history of the United States.

High Point University
Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas will speak at HPU’s 2008 commencement scheduled for 9 a.m. May 3. Grammy Award winner Lee Greenwood will entertain graduates and their families.
This year’s baccalaureate message will be delivered by Thomas G. Long, a Presbyterian minister and Bandy Professor of Preaching at Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta. The baccalaureate ceremony will be at 6 p.m. May 2.

HPU’s College of Arts & Sciences will be named the David R. Hayworth College of Arts & Sciences in recognition of the lifetime commitment of David Hayworth to the university. Hayworth recently pledged to HPU the single largest gift in the school’s history, bringing the total investment from David Hayworth and his family to more than $25 million.

HPU’s former department of behavioral science and human services has changed its name to the department of human relations, sociology and nonprofit studies, and has reorganized its course offerings.
The department offers majors in human relations, sociology and nonprofit leadership and management. The graduate program, previously an M.P.A. in nonprofit management, is now an M.A. in nonprofit management.
One faculty member was hired, Christine Cugliari, who teaches in the nonprofit graduate program, bringing the total faculty in the department to seven.

Sen. Ulysses Currie, (D-Md.), has been selected to be the Fall 2007 Commencement speaker for Dec. 15. Line-up begins at 8 a.m. at the Greensboro Coliseum.
