California Board of Education Approves Kaplan's Momentum Math As a State-Adopted Math Intervention Program

Kaplan K12 Learning Services announced that the California State Board of Education (BOE) has named Kaplan's Momentum Math program as an approved Math Intervention program for Grades 4 -- 7.

To earn state-approved adoption, the program went through a rigorous review process by the California BOE's Curriculum Commission, comprised of educators from across the state. Programs had to meet stringent criteria laid out by the state, organized across five categories: mathematics content/alignment with the standards, program organization, assessment, universal access, instructional planning and support.

The California BOE report states, "The Curriculum Commission recommends Kaplan K12 Learning Services' Momentum Math for adoption...because it aligns with the required subset of Mathematics Content Standards and meets the evaluation criteria."

The report further highlights that Momentum Math "supports comprehensive teaching of (state math standards) and is designed to accelerate the progress of students in mathematics" and "contains strategies and tools for measuring student achievement, suggestions for using assessment data to guide instruction. It also notes that the program "is accessible to all students and include strategies to adapt the curriculum to meet students' identified special needs" and "provides support for the teacher when planning instruction and implementing the program."

Momentum Math consists of six volumes of instruction, each focusing on a specific area of mathematics: Place Value and Basic Number Skills; Fractions and Decimals; Ratios, Rates, and Percents; The Core Processes of Mathematics; Functions and Equations; and Measurement. The program was designed for students who are two or more years below grade level and have not been successful in a traditional math program. Through dynamic and visually engaging lessons, students deepen their understanding of the connections between and within the strands of mathematics.
