PROVIDENCE – Mayor David N. Cicilline has appointed Philip Gould to one of three openings on the School Board and reappointed Board President Mary McClure and Ronnie Young.
Gould is a professor of English at Brown University and the author of several books and dozens of articles. He has 20 years of teaching and administrative experience. Gould serves on the board of directors and the curriculum committee of the Paul Cuffee School.
“As a parent of a child who has special needs and attends special education classes in one of our schools, Philip Gould brings a unique perspective to the School Board,” Cicilline said. “It’s my hope that the board will also benefit from his expertise in higher education as we continue to redesign our high schools and prepare our students for college.”
Cicilline said McClure and Young share his vision for excellence in the schools and have demonstrated their commitment to the success of the district. “Their continued presence on the board,” he said, “will help maintain continuity as we work toward accelerating student achievement.”
McClure is a three-term board member and a former member of Parents for Providence Schools. She serves on the executive board of the Rhode Island Association of School Committees and is a former manager of Internet technology at Brown.
Young is a graduate of Classical High School who is working on his master’s degree in public administration at Roger Williams University. He works for the Greater Elmwood Neighborhood Services program.
If confirmed by the City Council, they will be sworn in next month.
