Center gets grants on tobacco, alcohol

CHARLESTON – Eastern Illinois University’s Health Education Resource Center recently received two grants that will bolster its efforts to educate students about tobacco and alcohol.

The first grant, $15,000 in continued funding from Live Free Tobacco Free, will allow the HERC to create an even stronger impact in its health education and promotion efforts concerning tobacco use and cessation.

The second grant, $7,500 from the Illinois Higher Education Center, will be used to enhance alcohol-education efforts, including the creation of a First-Year Health Guide for incoming students and a Student Leader Guide to Alcohol and Other Drugs.

“This will allow students to become empowered with knowledge as well as begin preparing them to assist their peers in key decisions concerning health and safety,” said Rachel Z. Fisher of EIU’s HERC.

The center’s mission is “to prevent and reducepreventable health risks and illnesses that interfere with academic performance, learning, student retention, andpersonal growth opportunities,” Fisher said.

Thomas named provost as of Jan. 1

MACOMB – Jack Thomas, senior vice provost for academic affairs and professor of English at Middle Tennessee State University, Murfreesboro, has been named provost and academic vice president at Western Illinois University, effective Jan. 1.

President Al Goldfarb said Thomas, highly recommended by the Provost Search Committee, will bring broad leadership experiences to Western. He replaces Joe Rallo, who left WIU in May to become president at Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas. Rallo had served as Western’s provost since July 2003.

“Dr. Thomas’ outstanding experiences in the areas of academic enrichment programs, diversity, student affairs, internationalization and distance learning; as well as his understanding of, and enthusiasm for, Western’s strategic plan, mission and core values made him the top choice in a field of exceptional candidates,” Goldfarb said.

Thomas has served as senior vice provost at Middle Tennessee State University, with an enrollment of 23,000, since July 2006.
