ACOUNCIL has announced a L90m investment programme in education and community facilities.

A new special educational needs school and an extension to a secondary school to cope with rising numbers is part of the package set out by East Renfrewshire Council.

Isobel Mair School for children with special needs, in Giffnock, is overcrowded and some pupils have had to be sent to mainstream schools. The new-build school will be in Newton Mearns at a cost of L12.6m.

A further L10m to remodel Eastwood High and L2.4m to build an extension to St Ninian’s High has been allocated.

Anew community hub at Eaglesham, including a new library in the village, will cost L2.1m and will house a youth centre and changing facilities for nearby playing fields.

A new library in Thornliebank will be built at Thorntree Halls costing L1m and another L600,000 will be spent on upgrading Giffnock and Neilston libraries.

Barrhead will have L21m invested in several projects, including cash towards a new college and access roads to a new supermarket.

Jim Fletcher, East Renfrewshire Council leader, said: “This programme represents a major investment in council facilities. It has all-party support and we look forward to delivering it over the next five years.”
