Campus Names New Librarian
DARE COUNTY | College of The Albemarle’s Dare County campus has a new librarian.
George Strawley holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Temple University, a master’s in liberal arts from St. John’s College, a master’s in journalism from Ohio State University, and a master’s in library and information studies from Rutgers University.
Strawley was formerly a reference librarian with PRO LiBRA Associates and Rutgers University, a staff writer with The Associated Press , a teaching assistant in the Department of Journalism at Ohio State University, and a reporter and copy editor with The Press of Atlantic City, N.J.

Senior advances in competition
First Flight High School senior Lauren Hollowell has been selected a semifinalist for the Morehead-Cain Scholarship at UNC-
Chapel Hill .
She will advance to regional level to compete for a four-year scholarship .

Program nets money for first flight
First Flight High School librarian Jen Smith recently received $600 raised through General Mills’ Box Tops for Education program from Principal Margie Parker to purchase more books .
Six thousand box tops were turned in by students, staff and their families .
Gates County
Groundbreakings set for next week
The Gates County Board of Education will hold groundbreaking ceremonies for additions at three schools Jan. 18 .
They will be at 1:30 p.m. at T.S. Cooper Elementary School, 2:15 p.m. at Gates County High School and 3 p.m. at Buckland Elementary School.
Perquimans County
MATHEMATICIANS SCORE HIGH in contest
Perquimans Middle School’s academically and intellectually gifted advisory group recently participated in the 2007 American Mathematics Contest 8.
Nineteen students from Perquimans Middle School participated.
Sixth-graders who received recognition were: Robin Todd and Tyler Williamson, tied for gold; silver, Brandon Williams; and bronze, Mariah Fuller .
The seventh-graders recognized were: gold, Amber Winslow; tied for silver, Tierra Knight and David Davila; and bronze, Robert Denson .

Life experience used in student project
Perquimans County High School student Dawn Boyce’s senior project is an example of traditional learning with real-world
application.
Dawn lost her aunt to cancer, and she wanted to honor her memory by raising money for cancer research.
She shadowed Dr. Cynthia Ballenger during the semester-long project. She wrote the paper, created visual aids and a portfolio, and presented her findings on radiation and chemotherapy . She raised more than $1,700 for Relay for Life .
