RB Teacher Finalist for Bravo Award

Six Southland teachers and three schools were named finalists for the Music Center of Los Angeles County’s Bravo Awards honoring exemplary arts education.

General classroom teacher nominees are Janet Barker of Parras Middle School in Redondo Beach, Safini Convey of Mount Washington Elementary in Los Angeles and Lisa Jenks of Valley View Elementary in Glendale.

The finalists for arts specialist teachers are Angela Gottschall from Hale Middle School in Woodland Hills, Paul Stephenson of Westridge School in Pasadena and Joni Swenson from Santa Monica High School.

Colfax Avenue Elementary School from the Los Angeles Unified School District, San Marino High School from the San Marino Unified School District and Sycamore Elementary School from the Claremont Unified School District were named school finalists for the 26th annual award.

Winners of the Bravo Awards will be announced Feb. 27. Winning teachers receive $4,000 prizes, which the winning school receives $10,000.

The Music Center Bravo Award, established in 1982, honors educators who use the arts to “revitalize teaching, enhance student achievement and foster self-esteem, teamwork and cross-cultural communication and understanding.”

The Bravo Awards are supported by Club 100, a Music Center support group.
