MONASH University will increase the range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses offered for students at its new Sunway campus.

This follows the university’s launch of its own, purpose-built RM200 million campus in Bandar Sunway, Selangor, which is equipped with a world-standard range of teaching, learning and research facilities.

Students at the campus have access to a state-of-the-art library and learning commons, large and comfortable lecture theatres and 40 laboratories for teaching and research.

The campus, one of eight operated by Monash University in Australia, Malaysia and South Africa, is being developed in two phases, with the first being able to accommodate up to 5,000 students.

“This expansion of infrastructure will provide a significant boost to our efforts to become a premier private research-intensive university campus that contributes to education in Malaysia and Southeast Asia in the coming years,” said Monash University’s pro vice-chancellor and president (Malaysia), Professor Robin Pollard.

Monash University’s wide range of programmes is offered by the Schools of Arts & Sciences, Business, Information Technology, Engineering and Medicine & Health Sciences.

For next month’s intake, the university’s new programmes include the Bachelor of Nursing and Bachelor of Arts (Global) programme, as well as two new postgraduate programmes – the Master of International Business and Master of Arts (Communication and Cultural Studies).

The programmes introduced this year – the Bachelor of Arts (Psychology), Bachelor of Psychology and Business and the Bachelor of Science (Food Science & Technology) were received very positively and student interest is expected to increase.

Monash University has a strong heritage of high quality education and research.

It has been ranked as one of the top 50 universities in the world by the reputable Times Higher Education Supplement in 2005, 2006 and 2007 consecutively.

Being a member of Australia’s “Group of Eight” universities further emphasises the Monash excellence in teaching, learning and research.

“Students at our campus benefit from the same heritage and reputation and this is reflected by the fact that the majority of our graduates secure employment within three months of graduation,” said Pollard.

Courses offered at Monash are also accredited by professional bodies and accreditation agencies in Australia and Malaysia.

The Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme taught in Malaysia is the first outside Australia and New Zealand to be recognised by the Australian Medical Council, which means that medical graduates from Malaysia are recognised to practise in these two countries.

“A key factor in delivering quality education is attracting a group of high quality academic staff and Monash University is fortunate to have brought back to Malaysia internationally renowned research leaders to join the existing team of high quality academics on campus,” added Pollard.

He said emphasis is also placed on learning excellence and there are established mechanisms in place to ensure that the university offers an optimal learning environment for students.

Pollard pointed out that aside from its reputation of being a globally recognised provider of quality education, the university’s campus in Malaysia also attracts many international students because of the study experience it offers.

“Students here get the same Monash quality education, the same Monash qualification as well as the international exposure as there are students and staff here from more than 40 countries.”

Students at the Sunway campus, while paying Malaysian fees, can also study up to a year in Australia or South Africa to further enhance their learning experience without disrupting their education.
