Teaching center cites faculty participation
NORMAL – Illinois State University’s Center for Teaching, Learning and Technology has awarded its new “Path to Excellence” awards, measured by faculty participation in teaching development activities.
Mennonite College of Nursing won first place with an average of 13.8 hours per faculty member, some 134 percent above the campus average of 5.9 hours. Mennonite will receive $3,000 for more activities.
Second place went to School of Social Work, whose faculty averaged 13.7 hours per faculty member. The school will receive $2,000.
Third place went to Department of Criminal Justice Sciences, whose faculty members averaged 9.6 hours. The department will receive $1,000.
ISU educators spent 6,347 hours in CTLT activities in 2007, the equivalent of 846 7.5-hour days.
SOUTHERN ILLINOIS
$1 million donated to campus projects
CARBONDALE – Southern Illinois University, the SIU Foundation and Saluki Athletics got a boost in their fundraising endeavors for Saluki Way last week when Greg Cook, president and co-founder of Cook Portable Warehouses, and his wife, Nancy, announced they were pledging $1 million.
The money will go toward the Saluki Way athletic facilities project. It features a new 15,00-seat football stadium, renovation of SIU Arena and construction of a 56,000-square-foot arena addition.
WESTERN ILLINOIS
Campus participates in national teach-in
MACOMB – Twenty Western Illinois University faculty members will be among the panel presenters Thursday when WIU and more than 1,000 other educational institutions nationwide participate in “Focus the Nation Global Warming Solutions: A National Teach-In.”
The teach-in will kick-off at 7 p.m. Wednesday with the live Web cast “2% Solution,” produced by the National Wildlife Federation and aired by the Earth Day Network.
Thursday’s presentation sessions will run consecutively from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sessions will include four speakers, each with 15 minutes on their topics.
Western’s teach-in will conclude with the 7 p.m. showing of “Who Killed the Electric Car?” The 2006 documentary film explores the birth, limited commercialization and subsequent death of the battery electric vehicle.
