Tabula Digita's Game-Based Algebra Software to Be Used in Three Palm Beach County Middle Schools

Posted on: Thursday, 31 January 2008, 15:00 CST

Being able to captivate students so much that they will forget that they are learning -- but not forget what they have learned -- is no easy task. But educators at Roosevelt, Bear Lakes, and Conniston Middle Schools in Palm Beach County School District have found a solution that will do just that while teaching complex mathematical concepts. The answer? Educational video games from Tabula Digita's DimensionM™ series.

Using all three hit titles of the DimensionM™ product series the Palm Beach County educators whole-heartedly believe that students' passion for learning will come alive through the dynamic, three-dimensional learning environments offered by the games. Algebra students will use Dimenxian Algebra while Pre-Algebra learners will try their hand at the Evolver Singleplayer or Mulitplayer series. Unique to most current educational video game titles, the Multiplayer game allows students to compete individually or in teams, with students from their own classroom, across the district or around the world.

But no matter what game is being played, every student will be transported to a virtual world bursting with action -- and Algebra instruction, practice and reinforcement based on standards set by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Through a series of interesting and sometimes complex "missions" or lessons, students will rapidly acquire Algebra concepts critical to passing high stakes exams and meeting grade promotion requirements.

"In the past, teachers often found it difficult to justify the use of simulation or adventure computer games during school time because their content did not align with state or national curriculum standards," said Gary Weidenhamer, manager of educational technology for the Palm Beach County School District. "Because the DimensionM games are designed as a supplemental tool, teachers will be able to easily integrate the games with a variety of instructional models -- from classrooms to computer labs to extended day programs."

In addition to the high engagement level and collaboration capabilities, the games allow teachers to track individual student performance and provide spot-on feedback. A complete portfolio of support tools can be accessed through any combination of print, online or electronic resources. The video games also support several key objectives that have been requested by educators including: increased achievement against educational goals, diagnostics based upon performance, recommendations for remediation, online competition and peer tutoring.

"We're extremely pleased that our educational video games will soon provide a highly engaging and intriguing learning environment that will transform the way students learn and apply math," said Ntiedo Etuk, CEO and co-founder of Tabula Digita. "We understand that the principals at two the middle schools are brothers and have decided to engage in a little friendly gaming competition -- and that's what learning is all about sharing, engaging and stretching the mind."

The DimensionM™ games are available for purchase under a site or district license. The software is available for both Windows and Macintosh platforms. For more information, visit www.DimensionM.com.
