Principal Wins Regional Title
DARE COUNTY | First Flight High School Principal Arty Tillett has been named Northeast Region 2008 Wachovia Principal of the Year in the annual recognition sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, The Principal’s Executive Program and Wachovia Corp.
Tillett is a graduate of Manteo High School and the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. He earned licensure as a principal at East Carolina University. He will move on to compete with seven other regional winners for 2008 Wachovia Principal of the Year.

FBLA LEADERS EARN HONORS
Three members of Moyock Middle School Future Business Leaders of America recently attended the North Carolina FBLA Leaders in America Competition/Leadership Conference held in Pinetown.
Missy Pollard, Faith Williams and Kailey Tobin took part in three competitions and attended leadership workshops along with students from the eastern North Carolina region.
Missy placed first in the FBLA Creed competition. Faith took first in the Public Speaking category, and Kailey placed second in the Business Math competition. The students will continue on to the state competition in Greensboro in April.
LEARN ABOUT EARLY COLLEGE schooling
Currituck County’s middle schools will hold Early College High School information sessions for parents of eighth-grade students.
Information will be provided and the application process will be explained in two meetings. The first meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Moyock Middle School. A meeting will also be held at 7 p.m. Feb. 12 at Currituck County Middle School.

Dare County
STUDENTS READ TO WIN SHUFFLES
Dare County Elementary School students were given the opportunity to participate in a book-reading contest sponsored by Chilli Peppers Restaurant and Bar and Stripers Bar & Grille.
The students had to read a minimum of five books. Participating students were awarded $5 gift certificates to use at either restaurant and random drawings were held for a student from each of Dare County’s five public elementary schools to win an iPod Shuffle.
The winners are Tasia Pendleton, Manteo Elementary; Brianna Phillips, First Flight Elementary; Grace Sullivan, Kitty Hawk Elementary; Jesse Mueller, Cape Hatteras Elementary; and Brittany Graham, Nags Head Elementary.
SCHOOL TO HOST CHAMPIONSHIPS
First Flight High School will host the Northeastern Coastal Conference Cheerleading Championships on Saturday.
Doors will open at 10:30 a.m. Admission costs $5.
STUDENT QUALIFIES FOR HONORS BAND
Cape Hatteras Secondary School of Coastal Studies freshman Brad Dunnagan has qualified to perform with the NCBA Eastern District Honors Band.
He earned the right to return with 12 other trumpeters across the eastern district to participate in the band clinic at East Carolina University this weekend.

HELP FOR TUITION AVAILABLE
Chowan University is offering a way to get more financial assistance for college tuition.
Students who have a 2.5 or better grade point average and who are involved in leadership roles in clubs, groups or sports could be eligible for the Chowan University Leadership Scholars.
Anyone whose application is accepted into Chowan University and meets the qualifications will have a chance to compete for free money.
After applying, come to Chowan University on Feb. 18. Registration for the Leadership Scholars Day begins at 10:30 a.m.

ENROLLMENT REACHEs MILESTONE
Enrollment at Chowan University continues to increase each semester.
With the latest numbers in for the spring enrollment, the totals are 795 (full-time equivalent) with a total enrollment of 900, which constitutes the largest spring enrollment in 20 years.
Pasquotank County
ROANOKE TO PRESENT PROGRAM
Roanoke Bible College will present Celebrate Truth 2008 with Hank Hanegraaff , president of the Christian Research Institute, at 6 p.m. Thursday. He will speak about contemporary challenges facing the church.
The evening will begin with a banquet at 6, followed by a lecture and question-and answer time at 7.
The event will be held in the Chesson Gymnasium in the Albert Blanton III Center. Business attire is requested.

Perquimans County
PRINCIPAL RECOGNIZED
Jamie C. Liverman, principal of Perquimans County Middle School, was selected in the fall to represent Perquimans County Schools in the 2008 Wachovia Principal of the Year program.
He was recently named runner-up for the northeast region. If the principal named Northeast Region 2008 Wachovia Principal of the Year is unable to move forward in the state process, Liverman will be invited to assume the position.
STUDENTS WANTED FOR ART SHOW
Students in Perquimans County are invited to submit artwork for the Student Art Show at the Perquimans Arts League Gallery.
The show will open with a public reception at 6 p.m. next Friday and continue through March 5. Artwork may be brought to the gallery beginning Monday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
Students are encouraged to enter artwork completed in school or out of school. Art media includes painting, drawing, fabric arts, ceramics/pottery, collage, sculpture, mixed media, calligraphy, photography, stained glass and woodworking. Framed items must have wire on the back for hanging.
Each item should include the artist’s name, phone number and school name of the submitting artist.
A jury committee will review all submitted work.
