New Online Program Helps Students Improve Crucial Math Fact Mastery

Posted on: Monday, 11 February 2008, 06:00 CST

ALEKS Corporation, a leading provider of K-12, Higher Education, and consumer Web-based assessment and learning solutions for mathematics, today announced the release of QuickTables, a math fact mastery tool for multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction for grades 3 and up. ALEKS QuickTables content is correlated to National Council of Teachers of Mathematics standards and covers a 0-12 range of facts. The online program offers an interactive Student Module with ongoing assessment, learning, review, and visual tracking of student progress. In addition, a powerful Teacher Module allows teachers to monitor student progress, generate customized worksheets, and adjust program settings to best fit student and class needs.

ALEKS QuickTables:

Research-based program with individualized assessment and learning

Covers a 0-12 range of facts for multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction

Content correlated to NCTM standards

Ongoing practice helps students learn and recall facts

Interactive games provide additional review and built-in rewards

Unlimited online access -- PC & Mac compatible

ALEKS QuickTables is designed to be used by students on a weekly basis for three 15-minute sessions before, during, or after school. The program requires minimal teacher involvement for immediate implementation.

In QuickTables, the memorization of math facts is facilitated by a distributed practice mechanism that closely adapts to the individual student. This enables a learning sequence that carefully combines new and partially mastered problems, gradually moving the learned facts from short-term to long-term memory. Students master arithmetic facts through individualized assessment, learning, and interactive games.

Deborah Lawson, a third-grade teacher at Ralph A. Gates Elementary School in Lake Forest, CA, piloted the program with approximately 100 students for the school's after-school intervention program. She notes, "Never have I seen students so excited about practicing their math facts! ALEKS QuickTables is an amazing program which has made a big difference for our students. They can't wait to get on the program and are reluctant to get off. Compared to any other way of learning math facts, ALEKS QuickTables truly keeps the kids engaged and motivated. I would not want to go back to teaching without it!"

ALEKS developed QuickTables in order to address gaps in students' basic math skills. "It is crucial to ALEKS that we create course products that promote a more productive and rewarding learning process for students and teachers," said Wil Lampros, President of ALEKS Corporation. "By using QuickTables on a weekly basis, students will be better prepared and more successful in future math courses."

The new ALEKS QuickTables math fact mastery program is ready for immediate use, and can be used in conjunction with ALEKS course products or by itself.
