Business Competition Open to Middle, High School Students
A new program on Marshall University’s Huntington campus invited high school and middle school students to compete for certificates and prizes from local sponsors and entrepreneurs while learning about starting a business.
The Hot Shot Business Competition, set for Saturday, is a computer simulation game created by Disney and the Kauffman Foundation. It shows young people what it is like to start a business.
The competition is fast-paced and fun and provides the opportunity to learn by doing, according to a news release.
Participants will learn how to spot business opportunities, deal with ethical dilemmas, get organized, make decisions and become savvy money managers, the press release said.
Winners of each session will be determined by who earns the largest profit.
While the students compete, parents and guardians can participate in a workshop about local support services for entrepreneurs, how a hobby can be turned into a business, opportunities for government contracting and continuing education opportunities.
Students can register for the competition by calling Kathleen Thornton at Marshall University Community and Technical College’s Small Business Development Center at 399-1042.
The deadline to register is 4 p.m. Friday.
There is no charge for the competition, but a maximum of 80 participants will be accepted for each of the two sessions.
