Mon County Spelling Bee Winners Take Home Trophies: 24 Top Spellers Move to Regional Competition

Mar. 1–The top spellers in Monongalia County took home trophies Friday after placing in the countywide spelling bee.

About 80 students participated in the bee at Westwood Middle School.

Every student who participated received a certificate and the 24 students who placed received a trophy and a spot in the regional spelling bee.

Matt Minard, Olivia Kelly, Ashley Bruner, Aishwarya Vijay, Adison Nordistom and Elisabeth Blemings were the winners for fifth grade.

Jacob Souch, Filip Mazurek, Duncan Crooks, Daniel Berrebi, Anna Smith and Devin Mowry were the winners for sixth grade.

Alex Rubenstein, Demi Fang, Aelexxys Clutter, Michael Ewards, Michelle Ma and Alex Kaehler were the winners for seventh grade.

Alexandra Flanigan, Sidhartha Parhi, Jimmy Yuan, Larry Wu, Carolyn Lindsey and Robby Justiss were the winners for eighth grade.

The 24 students will compete with the 24 top spellers in Preston County at the regional spelling bee.

The regional spelling bee will be held March 12 at 7 p.m. at the Preston High School gymnasium.

Winners of the regional spelling bee will go on to compete in the national spelling bee, held in Washington D.C.

Students at Mylan Park Elementary School, Mountainview Elementary School, North Elementary School, Ridgedale Elementary School, Skyview Elementary School, St. Francis Central Catholic School, South Middle School, Trinity Christian School, Westwood Middle School, Woodburn Elementary School, Brookhaven Elementary School, Clay-Battelle Junior/Senior High School, Cheat Lake Middle School, Lighthouse Christian Academy, Mason-Dixon Elementary, Morgantown Learning Academy, Covenant Christian School and Morgantown Christan School participated in the spelling bee.
