15th Annual Charter Schools Conference Celebrates Movement's Progress
Posted on: Wednesday, 5 March 2008, 12:00 CST
The California Charter Schools Association today announced that the 15th Annual California Charter Schools Conference will begin today and continue through Friday, March 7, 2008 at the Sacramento Convention Center.
Conference keynote speakers include former astronaut and first American woman into space Sally Ride, California Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell and former NBA All-Star and Sacramento High School leader Kevin Johnson.
This year's conference will host a gathering of charter school teachers, principals and leaders and will serve as an opportunity for these individuals to participate in intensive educational sessions designed by pioneers in the charter school community.
The growing importance of the conference reflects building momentum toward charter schools as the answer to overall public education improvements. This fall, 90 new charter schools opened their doors for the first time in California, many of them replications of existing, successful models. The movement has also seen statewide growth of 40 percent over the past two years to close to 700 charter schools statewide.
"This conference celebrates the tremendous progress that the charter school movement has made over the past 15 years," said Caprice Young, president of the California Charter Schools Association. "With the charter school movement approaching 700 charter schools, today it's even more important that we focus on sharing our successes with the broader public school system."
Additionally, the conference provides an opportunity for educators to share best practices and innovative ideas to ensure ongoing success in public school reform. More than 2,000 attendees are expected.
Featuring a wide range of breakout sessions, conference topics include accountability, school-level practices, governance, facilities, finance and state and national policy issues. The conference will also include intensive workshops on charter school accountability and development. To review the entire conference schedule, visit: http://www.charterconference.org
