Student excels in competition
Manteo High School senior Heather Overton participated in the statewide Poetry Out Loud competition recently with students from 17 school districts from across the state.
Overton finished in the top five. This is the first year that a Dare County school has participated in Poetry Out Loud.
Poetry Out Loud, a national initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, encourages students to memorize and recite poetry while mastering public speaking skills, building self-confidence and learning about their literary heritage.
