Notices
– The Office of Special Populations, in conjunction with the Cooley Health & Science Technology High School, will host its parent information and health fair on Monday, April 7, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Juanita Sanchez Complex. Representatives from agencies will discuss career paths and planning for the future. Food and beverages will be available, and there will be door prizes. Families are encouraged to attend. – Kindergarten registration is being conducted through April 12 for students eligible to enter in September. To be eligible for kindergarten, children must have been born on or before Sept. 1, 2003.

First grade registration is being held through March 28. Registration is for students entering first grade in September and is for new students to the district who qualify for school choice. For information, call (401) 456-9297.
Elementary schools
– Carl G. Lauro Elementary School students Oscar Topia, Leslie Guerra, Kevin Ruiz, Dijiorre Perez and Parrys Perez received writing contest awards during the Black History Month concert. The music teacher is Muriel Holfelder.
Lauro Elementary School held several celebrations and competitions during Black History Month. The winners of the annual black history writing contest read their essays. The winners of the writing contest were Dijiorre Perez, first place; Parrys Perez, second place; and Oscar Tapia, third place. Maria Torres’ second grade class received an honorable mention.
Gift certificates to Borders were given as prizes by the school’s community partner, Gilbane Construction Co. The event was coordinated by assistant principal Nancy Tobin and Holfelder.
– The Veazie Street School Safety Patrol/Student Leadership Team participated in its first schoolwide community service project. With the help of the student body, faculty and staff, the team was able to donate 723 food and hygiene products to St. Edward Food and Wellness Center on Branch Avenue, which serves the North End.
– Carnevale Elementary School will hold its PTO meeting tonight at 5:30. The students of the month for January and February will be honored. Pictures are taken of the students and their teachers, and students’ names are posted on the cafeteria bulletin board for the year.
Middle schools
– Roger Williams Middle School students in Dora Valasquez’ eighth grade bilingual social studies class recently visited the State House. The class took a tour and met with state Rep. Grace Diaz, D- Providence.
Diaz described her role and answered questions about state government. The students were interested to learn that high school students can apply to work at the State House as pages. The students participated in a mock vote on whether their school should require uniforms. They discussed the arguments for and against.
The field trip was coordinated by Cynthia Davis, school-based coordinator for career and technical education, and Kim Callahan, graduate intern.
– Springfield Middle School invites parents and families to see student work on Monday, March 24, from 6 to 8 p.m.
Seventh graders from the Team Nation will present a science project on how diseases are transmitted through viruses and bacteria. Spanish translators and babysitting will be available.
High schools
– Cooley teachers Diane Diprete and Lisa Poirier recently arranged a field trip for the mock trial team and law and society classes to visit Roger Williams University Law School. The students met with professors, attended a lecture and observed their counterparts from the university’s mock trial team.
The social studies department started its its “practical politics” seminar with a visit from U.S. Rep. James Langevin on Friday.
Students in Diane Diprete’s economics and law and society classes attended a forum on Monday at the State House. Students gathered with peers from throughout the state to discuss national issues and to meet with state and local political leaders.
Tomorrow, students will hold a video conference with Sen. Jack Reed as part of their politics seminar.
The school will host a parent engagement celebration and prom fashion show on March 20.
– E{+3} Academy’s freshman class created temporary, large-scale murals designed to interact with the viewer and the environment, using low-adhesive tape.
The mural can be removed with no harm to the walls.
