Several local Montessori schools are holding open houses this weekend and next week. They are part of an effort by the schools to band together and spread the word about Montessori education, said Heather Parkinson, a teacher at the Montessori Children's Center in Concord.

Montessori schools are based on the teaching of Maria Montessori, an early 20th-century Italian doctor. The schools emphasize self- directed learning and encourage teachers to observe their students. Most local Montessori schools serve preschool-, elementary- and middle-school-age children.

Last year, 14 independently operating schools formed the nonprofit New Hampshire Montessori Association, which organized the open houses. The events will be held Saturday through April 6.

Parents considering where to send their young children to school are encouraged to attend, Parkinson said, as is anyone interested in learning more about the Montessori method of education. For more information, visit nh-montessori.org.

Local open houses will include:

- Green Valley School, Pembroke; 2 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday; greenvalleyschool.com

- Montessori Children's Center of Concord; 1 to 3 p.m. April 5; montessoriofconcord.org

- Pathfinder Academy, Epsom; 1 to 2:30 p.m. April 5.
