Boston University School of Management announced that the number of female applicants to the School's MBA program has climbed almost 70% over the past three years. The numbers have spiked from 332 in 2005 to 559 so far in 2008. The average female enrollment among the top 50 MBA programs is between 28%-30%. Boston University expects about 45% of the incoming class to be female.
"This reflects both the strength and appeal of BU's MBA program, and the significant learning, leadership, and recruiting possibilities the School offers to both its male and female students," commented Hayden Estrada, Assistant Dean of Graduate Admissions. "Though we have always had a strong female applicant pool, the quality this year is up significantly."
In the just-released 2009 ranking of business schools by U.S. News & World Report, Boston University School of Management placed among the top 50 MBA programs in the country, for the fifth consecutive year. The School ranked 40th.
The U.S. News & World Report focused in particular on reputation among peer institutions and recruiters, alumni starting salaries, and rate of employment after graduation. These are essential factors to MBA applicants, who know that when they graduate, they face a highly competitive job market.
"This School's MBA curriculum uniquely fuses the art, science, and technology of business. In addition to teaching about the increasing role of technology in business, we develop effective business leaders by imparting an understanding of, and an appreciation for, the art of business in combination with the traditional business sciences. With leadership as our goal, we stress the primary importance of interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, business ethics, and learning to achieve in and through teams," said Louis E. Lataif, Allen Questrom Professor and Dean, Boston University School of Management.
"This is especially so in the School's unique MS·MBA program, now in its seventh year. It has propelled the School's reputation with both students and corporations," Dean Lataif continued.
The MS·MBA program enables highly motivated graduate students to earn both a traditional Master of Business Administration degree with a concentration in one of the various business disciplines, as well as a Master of Science in Information Systems. Importantly, the two degrees can be earned in the same 21-month period normally required to earn a full-time MBA.
"The curricular strengths brought about by the MS·MBA program, along with the classroom experience that results in-part from the increased number of women MBA students, creates a uniquely rich learning environment," concluded Hayden Estrada.
