Gateway Gets Down to the Basics
By Mheegan Rollins
NEW HAVEN — Gateway Community College has established a new department to address academic needs of students who struggle with basic math and English concepts upon entering college. Professor Russ Gaudio will be the chairman of the department of college advancement studies.
The department will include English and mathematics faculty members who will provide curriculum and guidance designed to help students master the skills and competencies required for academic success in college degree and certificate programs.
“The purpose of the new department is to bring about high levels of integration and communication among courses and services for students,” said Academic Dean Mark Kosinski. “This department creates a shared sense of identity and a greater clarity of purpose for those who teach preparatory courses by establishing a department structure that supports a coherent, integrated, comprehensive, and up-to-date curriculum for our students.”
The department is designed as an avenue into college for students who need some additional time to review the basic math and writing skills that might have kept them from pursuing a degree in the past.
“The college exists to serve all students who want a better quality of life through education,” said Gateway President Dorsey Kendrick.
“And the college advancement studies department was created to help those who might otherwise shy away from the college experience,” she said.
