Pupils from an East Riding secondary have been invited to showcase their global studies work at the House of Commons.

Beverley High School is one of only 30 schools nationally involved in the Global Schools UK Project.

The schools, which include a global dimension in their teaching, are now being invited to share their work with the policymakers.

The Beverley girls’ school, which already holds the International Schools Award, includes global studies across the curriculum.

Deputy head Sharon Japp said: "It is part of our mission statement that our students will become educated global citizens.

"They need to know what is going on in the world as well as their impact on the world not just at national level, but at international level.

"They need to have an awareness of issues such as global warming and climate change to make them better citizens."

Geography teacher Clare Breen said the global fashion industry was among the themes studied by pupils.

She said: "A lot of girls get their clothes from cheap retailers and we have looked at where these clothes are coming from.

"As a result of that we can look at the social, political and economic implications of us getting cheap clothing from other countries.

"It has made the pupils think long and hard about where their cheap clothing comes from."

Pupil Bryden Fields, 13, said: "It is really interesting to find out about the global economy.

"You realise how the world works.

"If we come together as a planet we can support each other and be involved in things like fair trade."

Mrs Breen said it will be a privilege for the school to showcase its work at the House of Commons in London in September.

She said: "It is an acknowledgement of all the good work, time and effort that is being put into the Global Schools Project."

The event will include an awards ceremony in recognition of the work undertaken by the schools involved.
