CAMDEN - Friends of the Watershed Community School donated 64 items, ranging from a one-week cottage stay on Matinicus Island to private lessons in French, Latin or writing, for the annual spring auction.

Held at the new Brevetto Restaurant at the former Knox Mill, the auction featured chamber music by violinists Josie and Sophie Davis, students at the school. Auctioneer Phil Crossman, author of "Always Happens," sold the items.

A separate silent auction, featuring such gifts as handcrafted goat milk soap and a CD by McFravis, a local group of singers and violinists of the Davis, French and McMahon families, was held while the regular auction was under way.

The purpose of the auction was to raise money for the Watershed School, an independent high school meeting at the Lincoln Street Center in Rockland for the past five years.

The funds will help the school in its effort to expand, said Alexandra Lamprecht, one of the organizers of the fund-raiser and a parent at the school.

Barbara Fiore, president of the board of trustees, said she hoped the auction would raise upwards of $15,000.

The school is a small independent high school with a strong academic program, innovative teaching, student involvement in school governance and an "exciting" learning environment, according to Phil Gerard, founding director of the school.

Fifty-four students have studied at the Watershed School since its beginning. This includes 11 exchange students from foreign countries and seven students from Maine studying abroad.

Its 18 graduates have gone on to the schools of their choice, including Simon's Rock at Bard College, Eugene Lang College -the New School of Liberal Arts, University of Maine at Augusta, College of the Atlantic, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Central Maine Community College, Audubon Expeditionary Institute of Lesley College, McGill University, and North Carolina School of the Arts.
