Boston Schools Superintendent to Address Bunker Hill Community College Commencement

BOSTON, May 10 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Carol R. Johnson, superintendent of Boston's 57,000-student public school system, will be the keynote speaker at Bunker Hill Community College's 34th commencement exercises, BHCC president Mary L. Fifield announced today. The event will be held on Saturday, May 31, at 11 a.m. on the college grounds.
"No one understands better than Carol Johnson the importance of graduation for urban students today," Fifield said. "The choice of Boston's superintendent of schools as Bunker Hill Community College's commencement speaker this year reflects our mutual commitment to the success of all of our students."
Johnson, who has a wealth of experience in public education as a teacher, principal and administrator, took the helm of the Boston public school system in August 2007, following a national search. She served previously as superintendent in Memphis, Tennessee, the largest district in the state, with 119,000 students. Prior to that, she led the public school system in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she was named Superintendent of the Year. Johnson holds a bachelor's degree from Fisk University and a master's and doctorate from the University of Minnesota.
"It is my underlying premise that public education can transform lives, end generational poverty and help us see the oneness that has made America great," Johnson stated on assuming leadership of the Boston schools. She continues to set high expectations for students in the city where public education began in the United States.
Johnson serves on the board of the Council of Great City Schools and of the Spencer Foundation, a leader in educational research and innovation. She is a member of the Harvard University Urban Superintendents' Advisory Board, and she has served on the College Board.
Bunker Hill Community College is the largest community college in Massachusetts. The College enrolls more than 8,900 students on two campuses and at five satellite locations each semester. Some 1,700 students take classes online. BHCC is one of the most diverse institutions of higher education in the Commonwealth. Six in ten students are people of color and more than half of BHCC's students are women. The College also enrolls more than 600 international students who come from more than 95 countries and speak 75 different languages.
