Software Aid Draws Praise in Penn-Trafford District

A new program in the Penn-Trafford School District is receiving accolades.

Each school in the district was given the Gold Cap Award for its participation in the Fast ForWord reading program from Scientific Learning.

"It is an award Scientific Learning gives to schools who have been productive, have used their time wisely and shown the students are providing effort and there's a quality program going on," said Peggy DiNinno, assistant to the superintendent.

Fast ForWord is a software program that develops and strengthens memory, attention, processing rate, and sequencing.

"It's a series of research-based activities developed by Scientific Learning based on neuroscience," DiNinno said. "The Fast ForWord approach engages students in a series of activities that retrain areas of the brain that assist in reading.

DiNinno said continuous informal assessments are provided to help teachers to monitor students' progress.

The district began the reading program at the high school in January, before implementing it at the middle schools and elementary schools.

"From their standpoint we are implementing it properly, students are receptive and we are keeping them motivated," Superintendent Dr. Deborah Kolonay said.
