Go Places With Binary's Accounting Degree

REWARDING careers await graduates of the School of Accounting and Finance and the School Entrepreneurial Development (SEED) at Binary University College.

Dean of the School of Accounting and Finance Associate Professor Chung Cheng Hoe says the BA (hons) in accounting is among the few accounting qualifications in Malaysia with multiple accreditations.

The degree is recognised by CPA (Australia), accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), besides getting maximum exemptions from the ACCA (United Kingdom).

"With such recognition, our accounting graduates can work in many countries," says Chung.

To maintain quality, the school only provides 120 places each intake.

Those with good STPM and A-level results can apply directly to enrol in the honours degree programme.

For those with good SPM results, they can start with the Diploma in Accounting programme, which is also accredited by the MQA.

"There is a huge shortage of qualified accountants in Malaysia, which needs more than 49,000 of them by 2010."

Qualified accountants can become auditors, financial accountants, public accountants and tax consultants.

Many qualified accountants are now chief executive officers and presidents of companies as their training have prepared them well for the positions.

Another programme unique to Binary is the BA (hons) in entrepreneurship, which is offered through SEED.

This degree prepares one to become a professional entrepreneur.

Binary vice-chancellor and dean of SEED Professor Datuk Joseph Adaikalam says the programme provides the combination of the ISP formula and practical exposure.

"Students are guided through an incubator and supported by a mentor to ensure they successfully meet the objective of becoming their own boss," says Adaikalam.

The programme, introduced in 2005 after Binary was upgraded to a university college, has managed to produce budding entrepreneurs.

For instance, students Mohd Nizam Iskan, Lui Wei Kwong and Dhilip Krishnan, have all geared themselves towards running their own businesses after finishing their studies.

Nizam is set to open a leech-farming facility, Lui plans to start a special cafe while Dhilip is keen to venture into the vanilla trading.

Binary also offers the BA (hons) in business management, BA (hons) in marketing, BSc (hons) in management of technology, foundation in business, Diploma in Business Administration, Diploma in Marketing, Diploma in Information Technology and BSc (hons) in computer science.

The next intake is on May 28.
