West Virginia Wesleyan is Expanding Graduate Programs

BUCKHANNON - West Virginia Wesleyan College is implementing the next phase in its strategic plan to expand graduate programs by naming Kathleen M. Long as dean of graduate and extended learning.

Long will be responsible for Wesleyan's current graduate programs and overseeing the expansion of new programs. In addition, she will be charged with the research and development and of alternative curriculum delivery models including online courses and satellite centers.

Long has been a member of Wesleyan's faculty since 1987. She was promoted to professor of communication in 2001 and has served as the chairwoman of the Department of Communication since 1995. She also has served as chairwoman of the faculty during the past year. She has planned and conducted travel-study courses for undergraduate students in Bulgaria. England, Greece, Turkey, Australia and Nepal.

Prior to joining the Wesleyan faculty, Long was a faculty member at the University of New Haven and the University of Bridgeport. Her Ph.D. is from the University of Connecticut and she earned an M.S. from Southern Illinois University. She also has an M.A. from West Virginia University and received her A.B. degree with honors from WVU.

Long is the author of numerous hooks, articles, and chapters in books and has been a presenter at communication conferences throughout the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.

She received the "Outstanding Faculty Award" from Wesleyan's Community Council in 2001 and 2006. Long was honored as an Eastern Communication Association Teaching Fellow in 2001 as acknowledgement of an outstanding record of teaching and educational service. She was presented with the Distinguished Service Award by the Eastern Communication Association in 2003 and has been a Top Three Paper Award recipient by that organization in 1986, 1997 and 2006.

Long is currently an editorial review board member for "Communication Research Reports" and "Communication Quarterly," and recently served as the associate editor for the latter publication. She also has served as a member of the editorial review board for the "Journal of Intercultural Communication Research."

The addition of graduate programs and the development and implementation of alternative curriculum delivery models is a major component of Wesleyan's Strategic Plan," said President Pamela Balch. "Kay has been one of the College's most distinguished faculty members. She will bring energy, creativity, and enthusiastic leadership to our expansion initiatives."

Wesleyan currently offers a master's degree in business administration and a master's in education multi-categorical special education. The College recently announced a new master's program in athletic training, which will begin in August.
