Louisiana Students Show 'Marked Improvement' on LEAP Test

After a year of no significant growth, Louisiana's fourth- and eighth-grade public school students have shown "marked improvement" on the Louisiana Educational Assessment Program, or LEAP, test, the state Department of Education said today.

Fourth- and eighth-graders made gains in English language arts, and students made a particularly strong showing in fourth- and eighth-grade mathematics, DOE said.

Meanwhile, high school students taking the Graduation Exit Exam showed small but positive gains on the math and English/language arts portions of the test among those achieving basic and above. But GEE science and social studies scores were either flat or showed modest losses compared with past years; DOE said it will look into this further to determine the causes.

"I am pleased that our fourth- and eight-graders are moving above the plateau that it had seemed we'd reached last year," said State Superintendent of Education Paul Pastorek. "Our high school students are also improving in English/language arts and math, although not as much as we would like to see. We are not satisfied with the progress on science and social studies. It will take time to see the beneficial effect of the implementation of our High School Redesign Initiative.

"Our high school students are more often farther behind that their counterparts in the elementary grades and it will be harder to catch them up. We need to place a firmer commitment to providing credit recovery, dual enrollment opportunities, particularly in our technical and community colleges, as well as allowing our students to pursue high-quality industry based certifications."
