CATERING to the growing demand for personnel with Master of Business Administration (MBA) qualifications, Unisel Graduate School of Management (UGSM) has taken a step further to provide post graduate programmes with specialisations in general management, logistics management and shipping management.

According to its Associate Director Halid Hasbullah Boestamam, Unisel, which stands for Universiti Industri Selangor, is the only university offering MBA in shipping and logistics management.

Its MBA-Logistic Management is done in collaboration with the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) while its MBA- Shipping Management is a collaboration with the STC Group of Rotterdam.

For its July intake, Halid says three more new areas of specialisation will be introduced. They are project management, facilities management as well as occupational safety and health administration (OSHA).

UGSM had signed a memorandum of understanding last year to work together with KLIA Training & Consult to offer programmes for MBA in these three areas besides the professional qualifying examination for the CILT.

UGSM, formerly known as Unisel Lifelong Education Centre, also offers Master of Management (MM) by research and PhD or Doctorate of Philosophy by research.

The four areas focused by its MM programme are management, marketing entrepreneurship and human resource.

The duration of this full time programme will take two semesters or a year to complete while the part-time programme can be completed over four semesters or in two years.

MBA programmes at UGSM are quite popular and currently have 98 students with the average age of the working professionals taking its MBA programmes at about 40 years.

`Our youngest student is 27 years old while the oldest is 59 years of age. Most of our students prefer to have their classes on Friday afternoon and Saturday. The other option is to take the classes on Saturday and Sunday,' explains Halid. `We try to get 40 to 50 students for each intake and are considering opening classes in Penang and Johor Bahru.'

He says the fee for MBA programme at UGSM cost RM18,000 and RM25,000 for Malaysians and foreigners respectively. For the latter, besides the processing fee which ranges from RM35 to RM123, they are required to pay a bond fee ranging from RM200 to RM2,000 depending on the countries they come from.

The local students, on the other hand, pay a processing of RM20. They can withdraw from their Employees' Provident Fun, (EPF) or get a personal loan from Bank Rakyat and Bank Pertanian.

English is the medium of instruction for UGSM's MBA programmes. Incorporated since 2004, the school has two intakes in a year - in July and December. Coming previews of its MBA programme will be held on June 16 and July 5 this year.

UGSM will be participating in the My Career & Education Fair 2008 held on May 9 to 11 at Mid Valley Exhibition Centre (Kuala Lumpur) and at Persada Johor Bahru from June 21 to 23 for those who want to find out more about its MBA programmes, which are registered with the Malaysian Qualifications Agency, formerly known as the National Accreditation Board.

According to Halid, companies paying for their staff to take the MBA programmes can claim back the money from the Human Resource Development Fund. Terms and conditions apply.
