Redlands Eyeing New Textbooks

REDLANDS - Science textbooks to be used in Redlands' public schools are expected to be approved tonight.

Two hearings will be conducted at the school board meeting that begins at 7 p.m. in the district boardroom, 25 W. Lugonia Ave.

The first will be on science textbooks proposed for kindergarten through fifth grade; the second will be for grades six through 12.

The district recommends adopting California Science, MacMillan/ McGraw-Hill, School Division science textbooks copyrighted in 2008 for kindergarten through fifth grade.

The district recommends publisher McDougal Littell for "Focus on Earth Science" (copyright 2007) for sixth grade; McDougal Littell's "Focus on Life Science" (2007) for seventh grade; and McDougal Littell's "Focus on Physical Science" (2007) for eighth grade.

The district also recommends Publisher Glencoe for "California Glencoe Biology" (2006); Glencoe's "Chemistry: Matter of Change, California Edition" (2007); publisher Prentice Hall for "Earth Science" (2006); and Prentice Hall's "Conceptual Physics" (2006).

The board is expected to approve several agreements, including one with Braswell's Ivy Retreat in Mentone that would allow Redlands Adult School nursing students to perform clinical training at the site, free of charge.

Another is to approve free- and reduced-meal applications and reimbursement with the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools.

A bid of $276,710.52 to Redlands-based F.E.C. Electric for lighting retrofit work at 18 district sites is expected to be approved.

The board also will likely approve bids for asphalt work at school sites, including: $128,467 for Mentone-based IPS/ International Paving Solutions; $406,525 to Yucaipa-based D&L Wheeler Enterprises Corp.; $25,000 to Riverside-based Wheeler Paving Inc.; and $60,180 to El Monte-based E.C. Construction Co.
