CLARKSBURG, Md., May 15 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Avalon School, established in 2003 for boys in grades 3-12, will hold a 23- mile pilgrimage from its current rented facility on Radnor Road in Bethesda to the site of the school's permanent home in Clarksburg, MD on Saturday, May 17. Teachers, parents, students and friends of Avalon and its sister school, Brookewood (Grades K-12), located in Kensington, MD will bear a statue of Our Lady Most Pure by noted sculptor H. Reed Armstrong in procession. The 23-mile walk will commence at 9:15 a.m. following celebration of holy mass at the school. Five stops are planned for the day-long event: Our Lady of Lourdes Church on Pearl St., Bethesda; St. Jane de Chantal Church on Old Georgetown Rd., Bethesda; St. Mary's Church on Veirs Mill Road, Rockville; St. Martin of Tours on Frederick Ave, Gaithersburg; and the final stop at Avalon's future home, 22901 Frederick Road, Clarksburg, MD. Five decades of the Rosary will be recited at each stop. Refreshments will be provided along the way as well as transportation to and from participants' cars should they not be able to complete the walk. The day will conclude with a cookout at the Clarksburg property.
"We walk in thanksgiving for the gifts we have been given and in petition for our future needs," says Avalon Education Group, Inc. (AEG) President Richard B. McPherson, noting that "for five years and in three different locations Avalon has strove to bring a spirit of adventure as well as a challenging liberal arts curriculum to the young men of Montgomery County. Now, within our reach, is a permanent home for The Avalon School that will encompass more than 400 students." The school anticipates breaking ground in the fall and opening at the Clarksburg location in 2009. The Avalon School, a division of AEG, is joined by Brookewood School for girls, The Thomas More Institute for Home Schooling, and Hanging Rock Outdoor Education Center in Augusta, WV.
In its brief history Avalon has made itself known in the independent school community, having been chosen as the only area private school to participate in the pilot program of the National Poetry Recitation Contest (now an annual event), producing a National Merit Scholar and winning the Maryland Private School Varsity Baseball Championship and the Maryland Middle School Athletic Conference Tournament Baseball Championship. 2007 marked the school's first graduating class.
