William Stroube, a professor of health services administration, received the Outstanding Teacher of the Year award at the University of Evansville's spring commencement on Saturday.

The recipient of the annual honor traditionally is kept a secret until the graduation ceremony. Stroube received a commemorative plaque and $2,000.

"Most notable is Dr. Stroube's dedication to his students," said Jennifer Barchet, president of the UE Alumni Association board of directors, while presenting the award.

"Dr. Stroube works tirelessly with students to help them reach their goals."

Winning faculty members are selected each spring, and the award is presented by the UE Alumni Association. Students, faculty and UE administrators and staff may nominate any full-time faculty member who has at least two years of teaching experience. Stroube is in his 10th year at the university.

Recipients are chosen for knowledge of their field, approach to classroom instruction and influence on students and the teaching profession.

Although Stroube has been active in scholarly pursuits and in leadership roles on campus, UE officials noted the ringing endorsements he received from students who nominated him.

"I would not be graduating this May without his help," one nominating student wrote. " He has worked tirelessly alongside me in order to reach my goals."

This is the 40th year for the award, first presented in 1968. A selection committee of four students and four faculty members review the nominees and choose the winner.

Stroube received his Ph.D. in analytical and nuclear chemistry from the University of Kentucky in 1977. He received his B.S. degree in chemistry from Murray State University in 1973. In 1986, he received his MBA from the University of Maryland.
