"I think every teenager needs a little bit of encouragement," Principe said. "If someone believes in them, then they're more likely to take that chance because they know there is faculty supporting them."

This type of caring is what led to Diamond Ranch's selection as a 2007 California Distinguished School.

The school was also selected for the honor in 2003.

Principe said the success of the school can be attributed to the relationships the students have with the faculty, their parents and the community.

"In high school, it's important to have relationships because it encourages students to be the best they can be," she said.

Principe said the students' relationships with the community is tight and strong.

"You honestly feel like you're with your family," she said.

Academically, the school has programs such as American sign language and Chinese as a second language course.

Principe said the school offers 16 advance-placement courses - the average at most high schools is about 10.

"We also have an advance-placement art studio course - we try to have a well-balanced choice of classes, so we're reaching the interest of every student," she said.

Diamond Ranch has 1,900 students in grades nine through 12. Their mascot is a panther.

"Our motto is 'First-class citizens with a world-class education,' " Principe said. "Students don't care how much you know until they know how much you care and we truly believe that."
