DAYTON -- The following are recent news items and announcements from Dayton Public Schools:

- Thurgood Marshall High School senior Jose Omar Gutierrez has been named a 2008 Gates Millennium Scholar.

Gutierrez is one of 1,000 students nationwide chosen to receive the prestigious award, established in 1999 by Bill and Melinda Gates to provide outstanding minority students with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education.

- About 25 students in grades two through eight will present a short speech or poem of their choosing during the 50th annual Lucia May Wiant Speech Contest today, May 15.

The contest will start at 5:45 p.m. at Stivers School for the Arts, 1313 E. Fifth St.

- There is still time to join the Dayton Public Schools Students/ Parents Literacy Academy ... Soaring High! (SPLASH) program.

The program is a free series of workshops designed to assist parents in improving youth literacy skills. The Saturday instructional sessions run through May 31 and covers topics such as the writing process, the art of listening and speaking, study skills and poetry.

The sessions operate from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at several Dayton Public elementary schools. SPLASH concludes June 7 with a celebration.
